Folding E-Bike & E-Trike Care Guide: Safe Everyday MaintenanceUpdated 10 hours ago
A folding e-bike or e-trike needs the same everyday care as any electric cycle, plus a little attention to the folding frame, latch and cable routing. A few short checks before riding can help you spot normal wear early and keep the vehicle safe and enjoyable to use.
This is a general care guide. Use your model-specific manual for assembly, torque settings, folding sequence and component details.
Before every ride: a 60-second check
Before setting off, look for anything that has changed since the last ride:
- Folding latch: confirm the frame and handlebar folding sections are fully opened, closed and locked. Do not ride if a latch will not close securely, appears damaged or has unusual movement.
- Tyres and wheels: check for a visibly soft tyre, cuts, embedded objects, loose spokes or a wheel that does not sit straight.
- Brakes: squeeze each brake lever before moving. The brakes should feel firm and the vehicle should not roll when the parking brake is engaged.
- Controls and lights: switch the system on, check the display for errors, and confirm lights and indicators work where fitted.
- Battery: make sure it is correctly seated and locked, with no visible damage or unusual heat.
If brakes, steering, wheels, latches or electrical equipment do not feel safe, do not ride until the issue is checked.
Folding without damaging the bike or trike
Follow your model’s folding sequence. Before folding, turn the system off, remove loose cargo and check that cables are not trapped, stretched or sharply kinked as the frame moves.
Never force a latch, hinge or handlebar section. A latch that resists closing may be misaligned, obstructed or need adjustment; forcing it can damage the mechanism. Keep fingers clear of hinges and pinch points.
After unfolding, check the latch again rather than assuming it has locked because the frame looks open. On an e-trike, also make sure baskets or accessories do not interfere with steering, wheels or the folding mechanism.
For a latch that will not lock securely, see the folding-latch troubleshooting guide. Do not ride it until the latch is secure.
Tyres, brakes and drivetrain
Correct tyre pressure helps handling, range and puncture resistance. Use the pressure range printed on the tyre sidewall or your model manual; do not guess based on another model. Check pressures more often during temperature changes or if the vehicle has been stored for a while.
Keep the chain clean and lightly lubricated with a suitable bicycle chain lubricant. Wipe off excess lubricant so it does not collect dirt. Avoid spraying lubricant on brake rotors, brake pads, tyres or the floor.
Brake pads, cables, rotors and alignment are normal service items. If braking feels weak, spongy, noisy, rubbing or inconsistent, arrange inspection with a qualified bicycle technician. On e-bikes and e-trikes, activating a brake lever normally cuts motor assistance. If assistance stops even when you are not touching the brakes, see the brake cut-off guide.
Battery charging and storage
Use only the supplied compatible charger. Charge the battery in a cool, dry area on a non-flammable surface, away from direct sunlight and combustible materials. Do not charge a battery, charger or cable that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
If the bike or trike is stored for an extended time, keep the battery in a dry indoor location rather than leaving it in extreme heat, freezing conditions or direct sun. Check the battery level and its condition periodically. Do not open the battery pack or attempt to repair it yourself.

Cleaning: gentle is better
Turn the system off and remove the battery where appropriate before cleaning. Use a soft cloth, mild soapy water and a low-pressure rinse only where your model manual allows. Avoid pressure washers and direct high-pressure water at the display, battery terminals, motor connections, bearings, suspension seals or folding joints.
Dry the bike or trike afterwards, particularly around the folding latch, chain and electrical connections. Cleaning is a good time to inspect for loose fasteners, damaged cables, cracked reflectors or rubbing marks.
E-trike-specific care
E-trikes have a wider rear footprint and carry cargo differently from a bicycle. Keep rear loads balanced and secure, and slow down more before turns when the trike is loaded. Do not use a basket or rack as a lifting handle.
Before riding, make sure the parking brake releases fully. A brake that remains slightly engaged can create drag and may stop pedal assistance on models with brake cut-off sensors. If the rear brake light stays on when neither brake is being pressed, have the brake system checked by a qualified bicycle technician.
Routine service and when to ask for help
Arrange routine service based on use, mileage, weather exposure and any change in braking, shifting, steering or folding action. A qualified bicycle technician can complete ordinary maintenance such as brake adjustment, tyre service, chain care and wheel checks.
For a possible product fault, do not authorise a repair you expect Ridewave to assess until you have contacted us. Submit the Warranty Claim & Repair Request with your model, order number, clear photos/video and a short description of what changed.
