Hills, Pedal Assist and Sensors: Choosing the Right RidewaveUpdated 2 hours ago

For hills, the most useful question is not “Which vehicle has the biggest watt number?” It is: how steep, how long, how often, with how much rider and cargo weight, and where will you ride?

A well-chosen e-bike or e-trike makes hills more manageable, but every system works best when you use the appropriate gear, assist level and riding technique.

What actually helps on a hill

Hill performance is influenced by:

  • motor torque and available assistance;
  • battery charge level and capacity;
  • rider, vehicle and cargo weight;
  • hill gradient, length and surface;
  • tyre type and pressure; and
  • gearing and pedalling technique.

Before the climb, select a lower gear and a higher assistance level. Keep pedalling smoothly rather than forcing a high gear from a near-stop. On a trike, plan your line and speed before the slope: stopping midway on a steep, uneven surface with cargo can make restarting more difficult.

Pedal-assist feel: cadence, current-based cadence and torque sensing

A standard cadence sensor detects pedalling and then applies the chosen assistance level. It is simple and predictable, but the motor response is not directly proportional to how hard you press the pedals.

Miniwave uses a current-based cadence sensor. It gives a more refined and responsive pedal-assist feel than a basic cadence system, while retaining a predictable assistance character. It is not the same as a full torque sensor.

A torque sensor responds more directly to pedal pressure, which many riders experience as smoother and more natural. Ridewave’s premium Otter e-trike uses torque-sensing assist. This can be a valuable comfort feature for riders who prefer a more connected pedalling feel, but it does not replace the need to choose a suitable gear and assist level on a hill.

Choosing for regular hills

For paved commuter hills, Miniwave’s 250W high-torque rear hub motor is listed at 65 Nm and works with gears and pedal assist to make normal inclines more manageable. It is a practical choice where compact folding, road-compliant pedal assist and everyday transport matter.

For an e-trike, Wallaby is generally the stronger starting point when hill climbing is a main priority, while Platypus prioritises a lower, more relaxed semi-recumbent position. If your route includes gravel, grass or uneven ground, Wallaby Plus has wider tyres for a more planted feel.

Ridewave offers certain e-trike configurations in 250W and 500W versions. The 250W road-compliant configuration is the appropriate choice for public-road use. A 500W e-trike is for private property and off-road use only; it is not road legal for public-road use. Tell us where you plan to ride before we recommend a configuration.

A useful pre-purchase hill checklist

Send us a photo or map of the steepest section, your approximate rider/cargo weight, whether you can avoid the hill, and whether the vehicle will be used on public roads or private property. This gives us a better basis for a recommendation than a generic “can it climb hills?” question.
