The published range of an e-bike or e-trike is an up to figure, not a promise for every route. Treat it as a useful comparison between battery options, then plan around your own riding pattern.
The best starting point is not “What is the longest distance it can travel?” It is: can it comfortably complete my normal round trip, with a buffer, in the conditions I actually ride?
The seven factors that change range
The same vehicle can travel very different distances depending on:
1. Assist level: Higher motor assistance uses more battery. Lower assistance asks more from the rider and can extend range. 2. Hills and stop-start riding: Long climbs, repeated starts and low-speed manoeuvres require more energy than a flat, continuous route. 3. Rider, vehicle and cargo weight: A heavier overall load takes more energy to accelerate and climb. 4. Wind and weather: Strong headwinds, cold conditions and wet routes can reduce practical range. 5. Tyres and terrain: Low tyre pressure, rough surfaces, grass, gravel and soft ground create more rolling resistance than smooth sealed paths. 6. Riding style and gears: Smooth pedalling in an appropriate lower gear helps the motor work efficiently. Trying to force a high gear uphill makes the system work harder. 7. Battery condition and charging routine: Battery capacity naturally changes over time, while very low storage charge and unsuitable storage conditions can affect performance.
Plan for the normal day, not the perfect day
Write down your usual round-trip distance rather than only the distance one way. Add your steepest hill, typical cargo, normal assist setting and whether there is reliable charging at either end. Then leave a comfortable reserve for a detour, a headwind, a cooler day or higher assist when you need it.
For example, a flat leisure rider who pedals steadily may need far less battery than a rider making frequent stops with groceries on a hilly route—even when the two journeys cover the same kilometres. A trike rider should also include the vehicle and expected cargo in the planning conversation.
Compare battery options the useful way
When you compare models or battery variants, look at the battery capacity alongside your real route. A larger battery can provide more range buffer, but it can also add cost and weight. It is often worthwhile for riders who:
- regularly complete longer round trips;
- ride steep or windy routes;
- need to use higher assist often;
- carry cargo; or
- cannot conveniently charge after each ride.
A smaller battery may be sensible when trips are shorter, regular charging is easy and reducing purchase cost or lifting weight matters more. There is no universal “best” capacity; the correct choice is the one that leaves adequate buffer for your routine.
What an advertised range cannot tell you
Range alone does not tell you whether the riding position suits your body, whether the vehicle will fit through your gate, whether you can lift it for transport or whether the motor configuration suits your intended location. Use range as one part of the decision, not the entire decision.
