Miniwave Controller Removal for ServiceUpdated 7 hours ago

At some point during ownership you may need to access the controller on your Miniwave. The controller is the black box that holds the bike’s base programming and connects all of the electrical components (battery, motor, display, lights and sensors). This guide shows you where it is, how to remove it, and how the wiring connects.

Tools & Hardware

  • 2 mm hex key — the one in your Miniwave tool kit works, but a 2 mm hex bit (1/4" drive) in a driver makes the job faster
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Pillows or a yoga mat to protect the bike
  • Optional: a strap, belt or rope to hold the wheels together

You will remove 4 × 2 mm hex bolts (controller) and 4 × Phillips head screws (frame cover plate).

Step 1 — Locate the Controller

The controller is the black box in front of the rear tyre, just behind the seat tube.

Step 2 — Release the Controller

  1. With the bike on its kickstand, remove the four 2 mm hex bolts shown below.

  1. Once the bolts are out, a black spacer plate will try to fall out. Keep it safe — you will need it when reinstalling.
  2. Turn the controller 90 degrees as shown below so it can pass through the frame. This creates slack in the electrical cables.

Step 3 — Fold the Bike and Flip It Over

  1. Lay down pillows or a yoga mat to protect your bike.
  2. Fold the Miniwave and flip it into the position shown below so you can reach the wiring at the main fold. If you are not familiar with folding the bike, see the Miniwave Assembly Guide in this section first.
  3. You may want to strap the two wheels together with a belt or rope to stop them spreading apart. This is optional but keeps the bike stable while you work.

Step 4 — Remove the Frame Cover Plate

Remove the four Phillips head screws holding the black frame cover plate at the main fold and set them aside for reassembly.

Step 5 — Unplug the Wires

  1. Unplug the tail light cable located under the bottom bracket.

  1. Unplug the remaining connectors inside the frame.
  2. If there is not enough slack in the cables, make sure the controller is still sitting in position between the chainstays.

The cables coming out of the controller are:

  • Battery — yellow connector
  • Motor — large black multi-pin connector
  • Pigtail (display, throttle and brake levers) — black connector
  • Lights — two red connectors
  • Cadence sensor — orange connector

Step 6 — Remove the Controller

Pull the controller out of the frame, taking note of how the wires are routed. A quick photo helps with reinstallation.

Step 7 — Reinstall the Controller

  • Install the controller by following these steps in reverse.
  • Do not forget the spacer plate between the motor and the controller.
  • Make sure the protective spring around the cables is in place as shown below.
  • Power on the Miniwave and check that the display, pedal assist, throttle and lights all work.
