Otter Electric Trike Guide: Premium Comfort, Torque Assist & Everyday UseUpdated 10 hours ago
The Ridewave Otter is a premium folding e-trike designed around a smoother, more relaxed everyday ride. It combines a semi-recumbent position, large padded seat with supportive backrest, dual suspension, torque-sensing pedal assist and an advanced front steering joint intended to make low-speed turning feel easier.
Otter is not a traditional upright trike. Its best fit is a rider who values a lower, more supported posture and a more natural-feeling response to pedal effort.
Before you buy: 3 quick checks
- Check the seating position. Otter is semi-recumbent, with a relaxed, lower riding posture. Sit on one if possible and test your ability to reach the pedals, controls and ground comfortably.
- Plan storage and lifting. It folds for storage and transport, but it remains a substantial e-trike. Measure spaces and choose a realistic loading method.
- Test the turning feel. Otter’s steering design is intended to feel easier at low speed, but it remains a three-wheel vehicle: slow before turns and practise in a clear, level area first.
Who Otter suits
Otter may suit you if you:
- prefer a relaxed semi-recumbent position over a conventional upright bike posture;
- want a large, padded seat and supportive backrest;
- value pedal assistance that responds to how firmly you pedal rather than simply whether the pedals are moving;
- want both front and rear suspension for changing everyday surfaces;
- would like a stable, low-step e-trike with practical cargo space; or
- want a foldable model, while understanding that folding does not make it a lightweight lift.
It may be less suitable if you strongly prefer traditional upright pedalling, need a very small/light vehicle to move up stairs, or do not have sufficient storage width for a trike. If you prefer a semi-recumbent position but do not need the Otter’s dual suspension and torque-sensing system, compare it with the Platypus.
What torque-sensing assist changes
Otter uses a torque sensor. A torque sensor responds to pedal pressure: gentle pedalling calls for gentler assistance, while firmer pedalling asks for more support. This can feel more natural and progressive than a cadence-only system, particularly when starting, changing pace or riding through small changes in gradient.
It does not remove the need to pedal, select suitable gears or slow safely. Range and hill performance still depend on rider and cargo weight, gradient, surface, wind, tyre pressure, temperature and assistance level.
Semi-recumbent comfort and dual suspension
The Otter’s large padded seat, backrest and lower semi-recumbent layout are intended for a calm, supported everyday ride. What feels comfortable is individual: a test ride is the right way to judge pedal reach, steering reach, shoulder comfort and getting on/off.
Otter is Ridewave’s dual-suspension e-trike. It has adjustable front suspension that can be opened or locked, together with rear suspension. This can make uneven paths feel less harsh, but it is not a reason to ride quickly on broken ground or take turns at speed.
Turning, controls and low-speed manoeuvring
The advanced front steering joint is designed to help the Otter feel more manageable when steering through driveways, shared paths and other low-speed situations. Treat it as a comfort and control feature, not a replacement for good trike technique: reduce speed before corners, steer smoothly and keep loads secured.
Otter also includes a half-twist start-up throttle, lights, brake light, indicators, parking/handle brakes and reverse for careful parking manoeuvres. Use start-up assistance and reverse at walking pace only, with the surrounding area clear. Riders should check road rules in their state or territory before riding.
Battery, folding and cargo
Otter uses a Samsung 20Ah battery in Ridewave’s current product information. It is designed to give extra capacity for longer practical everyday riding, but actual range varies with route, load, conditions and assist level. Choose around your regular distance rather than expecting a single distance in every condition.
The folding frame can make storage and vehicle transport more manageable. Measure the full route into storage or transport—not just the final space—and do not assume a folded e-trike can be lifted solo. Use an appropriately rated ramp, carrier or extra person where required.
Otter has practical cargo space. Keep bags and equipment low, balanced and secured; confirm compatibility before fitting a child seat, pet carrier or third-party accessory.
Battery safety and ongoing care
Use the supplied compatible charger and charge in a cool, dry area on a non-flammable surface. Do not use a battery, charger or cable that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
For routine care, check tyres, brakes, lights, steering, folding latches and suspension operation before regular rides. A qualified bicycle technician can assist with normal brake, tyre, drivetrain and suspension servicing.
