Platypus Electric Trike Guide: Semi-Recumbent Comfort & FitUpdated 10 hours ago
The Ridewave Platypus is a folding e-trike for riders who prefer a lower, more relaxed semi-recumbent position over a conventional upright trike. Its three-wheel layout, wider chair-style seat, armrests and adjustable riding position make it a useful option for local transport, shopping and unhurried everyday rides.
The key question is not simply whether you want an e-trike. It is whether the Platypus’s forward-pedal, chair-style position feels more natural for you than the upright Wallaby layout.
Before you buy: 3 quick checks
- Check your preferred posture. On the Platypus, the pedals are positioned further forward of the seat. Test whether that relaxed, lower position feels comfortable through a full pedal stroke.
- Measure storage and transport. It folds, but a folding trike remains a substantial item. Check your access routes and how it will be loaded or moved.
- Consider how you will turn. The three-wheel layout removes the need to balance at a stop, but corners still need a slower, smoother approach than on a two-wheel bike.
Who the Platypus suits
Platypus may be a good choice if you:
- prefer a relaxed semi-recumbent riding position rather than an upright bike posture;
- value a larger, wider seat with armrests and a supportive backrest;
- want the seat to adjust forward and backward and the handlebars to adjust forward/backward as well as up/down;
- plan local journeys, errands or relaxed rides where front and rear cargo space is useful; or
- want a low, stable e-trike layout for everyday transport.
It may be less suitable if you specifically want a traditional upright pedalling feel, have routes that regularly require rough-surface suspension comfort, or need a vehicle that is easy to lift unaided. Platypus has a rigid front fork, so it should not be presented as a suspension model.
The semi-recumbent difference
The Platypus has a lower, semi-recumbent position. Its pedals sit further forward in front of the seat, rather than directly underneath the rider. This can feel more relaxed through the hips and upper body for some riders, but comfort is individual and should not be treated as medical advice.
The seat is designed more like a chair, with armrests and a supportive backrest. The seat moves forward and backward; the handlebars adjust in more directions than Wallaby’s. Together, those adjustments give more options for balancing pedal reach and upper-body reach.
If you are choosing between Platypus and Wallaby, use posture as the deciding factor:
| Consider | Platypus | Wallaby |
|---|---|---|
| Riding posture | Lower, semi-recumbent | More upright and traditional |
| Pedal position | Further forward of the seat | Beneath the rider |
| Seat and reach adjustment | Seat fore/aft; handlebar fore/aft and up/down | Seat height; handlebar height |
| Comfort focus | Chair-style seat with armrests | Upright backrest seating |
Everyday use, wheels and controls
Platypus uses a 16 × 3-inch front tyre and 20 × 3-inch rear tyres, supporting its lower layout. It includes a right-side half-twist start-up throttle, front and rear lights, brake light, indicators, parking/handle brakes and reverse for low-speed parking manoeuvres.
The standard start-up throttle assists up to 6 km/h. Use it only for controlled starts or walking-pace manoeuvring, with the space around you clear. Riders should check the road rules that apply in their state or territory before riding.
An e-trike is stable at rest but it will not corner like a bicycle. Slow down before turns, steer smoothly and begin with quiet, flat practice areas.
Storage, folding and carrying
Platypus folds to make storage and transport more manageable. The listed folded dimensions are 123 × 77 × 81 cm (length × width × height), or 80 cm wide with a front basket. Measure all doorways, storage spaces and vehicle openings, not just the final parking space.
The listed trike weight is approximately 45 kg with battery, and the listed maximum total load is 150 kg. Folding does not make it an easy single-person lift. Plan for two people, a suitable ramp or an appropriately rated carrier where required. Removing the battery may help with handling, but does not remove the need for a safe plan.
Platypus has front and rear cargo space for everyday items. Keep loads secure and balanced. Confirm a specific accessory’s fitting method and capacity before ordering; a rear-rack rating alone does not approve every third-party product.
Battery and everyday care
Platypus is listed with a removable 48V 15Ah battery. Charge with the supplied compatible charger in a cool, dry place on a non-flammable surface. Do not use a battery, charger or cable that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
Before regular rides, check the tyres, brakes, lights, steering and parking brake. For normal wear such as brake adjustment, tyre maintenance and drivetrain care, use a qualified bicycle technician.
