Wallaby Electric Trike Guide: Upright Comfort, Cargo & Everyday UseUpdated 10 hours ago

The Ridewave Wallaby is a folding e-trike for riders who prefer a more traditional, upright cycling position with the extra standing stability of three wheels. It is designed around ordinary local use: paths, paved streets, errands and relaxed rides where carrying a few everyday items matters.

The Wallaby is not simply a two-wheel e-bike with an extra wheel. It has different turning behaviour, a wider footprint and a substantial weight, so choosing it should begin with how you will park it, turn it and transport it—not only with motor specifications.

Before you buy: 3 quick checks

  1. Measure your space. Check the parking area, gates, shed doors, lift and vehicle opening. A folded trike is still wider and heavier than a folded two-wheel bike.
  2. Think about your normal surface. The Wallaby’s 20 × 3-inch tyres are the road-focused choice for paved streets, bike paths and regular urban use. If gravel, grass or rougher tracks are a major part of the route, compare it with the Wallaby Plus.
  3. Try the turning feel if you can. A trike remains upright when stopped, but it should be slowed before corners and turned smoothly rather than leaned like a bicycle.

Who the Wallaby suits

The Wallaby may be a good fit if you want:

  • an upright, more traditional pedalling position, with the pedals beneath you;
  • a low-step frame and supportive backrest for easier on-and-off access;
  • a compact folding e-trike for local trips and everyday errands;
  • a practical rear cargo platform; or
  • a road-oriented tyre setup with a slightly lighter, more agile feel than the Wallaby Plus.

It may be less suitable if you need an ultra-light vehicle to lift by yourself, regularly ride loose or very uneven surfaces, or want a low, semi-recumbent chair-style position. Riders who prefer their feet and pedals further forward, with more seat and handlebar adjustment, should also compare the Platypus.

The Wallaby riding position

The Wallaby is designed for a more upright e-trike posture. Its pedals sit under the rider, rather than well forward of the seat. The seat height adjusts up and down, while the handlebar height can be adjusted to help set up a comfortable reach.

That makes the Wallaby feel closer to a conventional bike than a semi-recumbent trike. It is a sensible choice for someone who still enjoys a traditional pedalling position but wants the confidence of not needing to balance the trike at a standstill.

Comfort is personal. If you have particular knee, hip, back, reach or mounting concerns, a test ride is more useful than a height range alone. Wear the shoes you would normally ride in, practise starting and stopping, and try a few gentle turns at low speed.

Tyres, suspension and everyday surfaces

The standard Wallaby uses 20 × 3-inch tyres. Compared with the Wallaby Plus’s wider 20 × 4-inch tyres, this setup is intended to give a more road-focused, manageable feel on sealed streets and bike paths.

Both Wallaby versions have adjustable front suspension, which can be opened or locked depending on the surface and your preference. They are front-suspension models, not dual-suspension trikes.

Use a lower gear and an appropriate pedal-assist level before a hill. Hills, rider and cargo weight, surface, wind and battery level all change the result, so no e-trike can be judged by one quoted number alone.

Controls that help with everyday manoeuvring

The Wallaby includes a right-side half-twist start-up throttle. In its standard configuration, it assists up to 6 km/h for moving off from a stop or carefully manoeuvring at low speed. It also has lights, a brake light, indicators, parking/handle brakes and reverse for low-speed parking manoeuvres.

Take time to learn these controls somewhere quiet and flat. Use reverse and the start-up assist only at walking pace, keeping the area behind and around the trike clear. Riders should check the road rules that apply in their own state or territory before riding.

Folding, storage and carrying

The Wallaby folds for storage and transport, but folding is an occasional convenience—not something you need to do after every ride. Once fully unfolded and locked, it is designed to be ridden normally.

The listed Wallaby weight is approximately 38 kg with battery and the listed maximum total load is 150 kg. This makes it important to plan lifting realistically. Removing the battery may make handling easier, but most people should not assume the trike can be lifted into a vehicle alone. A vehicle rack must be rated for the full loaded weight and suitable for the trike’s width.

The rear cargo platform is listed to carry up to 45 kg. Keep loads secured and balanced, and do not treat a rack rating as confirmation that a specific child seat, pet carrier or third-party accessory is compatible.

Battery and routine care

Wallaby uses a removable 48V 15Ah battery. Use the supplied compatible charger and charge in a cool, dry place on a non-flammable surface. Do not use a battery, charger or cable that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.

For general maintenance, keep tyres at the recommended pressure, check brakes and lights before rides, and have normal wear items serviced by a qualified bicycle technician. See Charging Your Ridewave Battery for fuller battery guidance.

What to do next

See the Wallaby product page for current specifications and availability. If you are comparing Wallaby with Wallaby Plus, measure the surfaces you will actually ride and consider a test ride rather than choosing only by tyre size.

You can book a test ride where available, or contact Ridewave with your height, usual route, storage measurements and cargo plan.
