Wallaby Plus Electric Trike Guide: Wider Tyres, Comfort & Everyday UseUpdated 10 hours ago
The Wallaby Plus is Ridewave’s wider-tyre version of the Wallaby folding e-trike. The two models share the same core platform, upright riding position and everyday controls. The key practical difference is the Wallaby Plus’s 20 × 4-inch tyres and the front fork used to accommodate them.
That difference matters when your local routes include grass, gravel, rough paths, dirt tracks or other softer, less predictable surfaces. It does not mean that Wallaby Plus is automatically better for every rider; it is a more planted, cushioned choice rather than the more road-focused choice.
Before you buy: 3 quick checks
- Look at the surface, not just the distance. The Plus is worth considering when rougher or softer ground is part of the normal route. For mostly sealed streets and bike paths, compare it with the standard Wallaby.
- Measure storage and transport carefully. Wider tyres add to the trike’s presence. Check your gate, shed, hallway, lift and vehicle plan before ordering.
- Practise turns at low speed. A three-wheel vehicle should be slowed before corners and guided through smoothly. It is stable when stopped, but it is not ridden by leaning as you would a two-wheel bike.
Who the Wallaby Plus suits
Wallaby Plus may suit you if you:
- want the same upright Wallaby riding position with more tyre volume under you;
- regularly cross gravel, grass, firm dirt, uneven paths or light off-road terrain;
- value a more planted, cushioned feeling over a lighter road-focused setup;
- want a low-step, folding e-trike with a backrest and practical rear cargo area; or
- prefer a traditional pedal position, with the pedals beneath the rider.
It may be less suitable if your riding is almost entirely on smooth pavement and you want the slightly more agile feel of the standard Wallaby. It is also not a substitute for a purpose-built off-road vehicle or for careful route judgement on loose, steep or unstable surfaces.
What is actually different from Wallaby?
The main difference is straightforward:
| Feature | Wallaby | Wallaby Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres | 20 × 3-inch | 20 × 4-inch |
| Best fit | Paved roads, paths and urban errands | Rougher, softer or mixed everyday surfaces |
| Ride character | More road-focused and agile | More planted, cushioned and traction-oriented |
The Wallaby Plus uses a slightly different front suspension fork to suit the larger tyres. Otherwise, the two models are functionally very similar: both have a folding low-step frame, a supportive backrest, a rear cargo area, removable 48V 15Ah battery, hydraulic braking across all three wheels, lights, indicators, parking/handle brakes, reverse and a right-side half-twist start-up throttle.
Riding position and controls
Wallaby Plus keeps the Wallaby’s upright riding posture. The seat height can be adjusted up and down; the handlebars have height adjustment. This is a more conventional cycling layout than a semi-recumbent trike, where the pedals sit well forward of the seat.
The standard start-up throttle assists up to 6 km/h for careful starts and low-speed manoeuvring. Reverse is useful when parking, but should be used slowly with a clear area around the trike. Riders should check the road rules that apply in their own state or territory before riding.
For hills, choose a lower gear before the climb and use an appropriate pedal-assist level. The tyre choice helps confidence on changing surfaces, but gradient, rider and cargo weight, battery level, surface and weather still affect performance.
Folding, transport and cargo
Wallaby Plus is foldable for storage and transport, but it does not need to be folded after each ride. Once opened and locked securely, it is designed for normal everyday use.
The listed weight is approximately 47 kg with battery, with a listed total maximum load of 150 kg. That makes a realistic transport plan essential. Removing the battery can reduce what you need to handle, but lifting a trike into a vehicle is usually a two-person task or requires an appropriate ramp or carrier. Never assume a standard bike rack is suitable; confirm its weight rating, wheel channels and width clearance.
The rear cargo platform is listed to carry up to 45 kg. Secure loads evenly and keep them within the platform. Check compatibility with Ridewave before fitting any child seat, pet carrier or third-party accessory.
Battery and care
Wallaby Plus uses a removable 48V 15Ah battery. Charge it only with the supplied compatible charger, in a cool, dry place on a non-flammable surface. Stop using a battery, charger or cable that is damaged, swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
Because wider tyres are central to this model, include them in your routine checks: inspect for cuts or embedded objects, maintain the recommended pressure and make sure the wheels are secure before riding. Arrange normal brake, drivetrain and tyre servicing as required.
