Brakes Are Rubbing, Squealing or Feeling WeakUpdated 3 hours ago

Brake noise can have a simple cause, but weak brakes or continuous rubbing should not be ignored. Start by separating a light intermittent sound from a brake that creates drag, reduces stopping control or changes suddenly after an impact.

What you can observe safely

With the vehicle switched off and supported securely, spin the relevant wheel by hand. Listen for a light intermittent rub versus a wheel that is difficult to turn. Check that the wheel is seated correctly and that the brake rotor is not visibly bent, loose or contaminated.

After rain, washing or storage, a short-lived squeal can occur as moisture clears. However, persistent squealing, a scraping sound, strong drag or vibration under braking should be inspected.

Do not touch a rotor immediately after riding—it may be hot. Do not apply oil, spray lubricant, household cleaners or tyre products near brake pads or rotors.

Stop riding immediately if

Do not ride if:

  • either brake lever pulls to the handlebar, feels spongy/weak or does not return normally;
  • the vehicle does not stop predictably;
  • the wheel is heavily dragging or locked;
  • you see a loose, damaged or bent rotor, leaking fluid or damaged brake cable; or
  • braking changed suddenly after a crash, hard knock or wheel removal.

These are safety issues. Do not attempt to bleed brakes, straighten rotors, adjust hydraulic components or disconnect brake cut-off wiring at home.

Where normal service may help

Routine brake-pad wear, cable adjustment, wheel seating and caliper alignment are normal bicycle-service items. A qualified local bike shop can inspect brake pads, rotors, cable tension, wheel seating and brake alignment. If brake drag is also stopping pedal assistance, review the brake cut-off guide.
