Chain Noise, Chain Slip and Drivetrain CareUpdated 3 hours ago

Not every noise comes from the chain. The most useful clue is when it happens. A sound that appears only while pedalling is different from one that continues while coasting, and a chain that slips under load needs more attention than a light dry-chain noise.

Listen for the pattern

  • Squeak or dry sound while pedalling: often points to a dirty or dry chain.
  • Click once per pedal revolution: may be around the pedals, crank or chainring rather than the rear wheel.
  • Noise while you are not pedalling: may come from a wheel, brake or another moving part.
  • Chain skips under firm pressure: may indicate worn chain/cassette parts, poor gear adjustment or a drivetrain issue that needs inspection.

Stop riding if the chain is visibly damaged, twisted, repeatedly comes off, jams, or slips suddenly under load. A damaged chain can lead to loss of control.

Safe routine care

With the vehicle switched off, remove surface dirt from the chain with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Apply a small amount of suitable bicycle chain lubricant to the chain rollers, turn the pedals by hand slowly, then wipe away excess lubricant. Keep lubricant away from brake rotors, pads and tyres.

Do not use a pressure washer, soak electrical areas, spray degreaser into motor/controller areas, or use household cooking oil as a regular chain lubricant.

When to book a bike-shop check

Arrange professional inspection if the chain skips under load, the drivetrain remains noisy after normal cleaning/lubrication, shifting is poor, the chain has visible corrosion or damage, or the issue followed an impact. A shop can assess chain wear, cassette/freewheel wear, chainline, derailleur alignment and gear adjustment.

Need help?

For a possible product fault, submit a warranty claim before authorising repair. Include a clear video made while stationary, describe whether the noise occurs while pedalling or coasting, and show the chain/gear area in good light. For routine servicing advice, contact Ridewave.
