Pedal Assist Feels Delayed, Too Strong or Does Not StartUpdated 3 hours ago
Pedal assist is designed to respond to pedalling, the selected assistance level and the vehicle’s safety systems. It may feel different after switching assist levels, starting from a standstill or riding on hills. Before treating it as a fault, separate a normal change in ride feel from assistance that is genuinely missing or unpredictable.
Start with the assist level and gears
Select a low or medium assistance level and choose an easier gear before starting on a flat, clear area. Higher assistance levels can feel more immediate or stronger, while lower levels require more rider effort. On hills, select a lower gear and a suitable assist level before the gradient becomes difficult.
If the vehicle is a Miniwave, its current-based cadence sensor is designed to feel smoother than a basic cadence sensor, but it will not respond exactly like a torque sensor. A brief start-up response difference can be normal.
Check whether the brakes are active
Pedal assistance will not operate while either brake lever is activated. A light touch is enough to trigger the cut-off. Keep fingers clear of both brake levers and check that the levers return fully after use.
If assistance returns when the levers are fully released, use the brake cut-off guide. Do not pedal and brake at the same time.
Identify the pattern
Please note which description best matches the issue:
- Delayed at the start, then normal: record the selected assist level, starting gear and whether it improves after a pedal turn.
- Too strong or unexpected: stop in a safe place, lower the assistance level, and check whether the issue continues. Do not change hidden settings.
- No assistance at all: check the display for an error code and whether start-assist throttle behaves normally.
- Cuts in and out while riding: check whether the speed reading changes and use our motor-assistance cut-out guide.
When to stop riding
Stop riding if assistance starts unexpectedly, continues when you are not pedalling, cuts out in a way that affects control, or appears after damage or water exposure. Do not open the pedal sensor, controller or wiring.
